A Quick Guide to Lightning Lane Multi Pass at Disney World

If you’ve been dreaming of an epic Disney World adventure without the marathon line-waiting, say hello to your new best friend: Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass replaces the previous Genie+ and Fastpass systems.

This little gem of a product gives you access shorter lines during a pre-selected timeframe, saving you hours and giving your feet a much needed break. In short, it’s not quite for skipping the line at your favorite attractions, but it does help you breeze through with ease.

And while it does cost money, unlike the original free Fastpass system, the outcome is quite similar: shorter lines with a tiny bit of waiting (if any at all).

Here’s everything you need to know to maximize your day at Disney World with Lightning Lane Multi Pass!

When to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass

Timing makes all the difference when it comes to purchasing Lightning Lane Multi Pass, as well as where you’re staying while visiting the most magical place on Earth.

If you’re staying at a Disney World or select neighboring resort…

Guests staying at any Disney World resort, Shades of Green, Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin, or Walt Disney World Swan Reserve, get a leg up compared to visitors staying elsewhere.

If you’re staying at one of these resorts, you can purchase your Lightning Lane Multi Pass starting 7 days before the first day of your trip at 7 AM Eastern.

The best part is that you can buy a Multi Pass for each day of your trip, up to 14 days, on this day. So if you’re lucky enough to be staying more than 14 days and want a Multi Pass past the 14th day, you’ll need to wait until 7 days before the 15th to book your additional Multi Passes.

If you’re staying elsewhere…

You can purchase your passes 3 days before your park visit at 7 AM Eastern.

If you have a date-based multi-day park ticket, you’ll be able to purchase a Multi Pass for the number of days your ticket is for, up to 14 days.

All other ticket types, including annual passes, must purchase 3 days ahead for each day you plan to visit unless you’re staying at a Disney World or neighboring resort listed in the previous section.

Where to buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass

When it’s time to purchase your Multi Pass, head to the My Disney Experience app and select Lightning Lane Multi Pass on the home page of the app.

From there, select a park, then select 3 attractions and time slots, and check out. It’s really that easy!

Some parks, like Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios, use a tiered system where you must choose one Tier 1 attraction and two Tier 2 attractions.

Tier 1 attractions are the heavy hitters, like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom or Test Track at Epcot, while Tier 2 attractions are the amazing supporting acts, like Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom or Kilimanjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom.

If you’re planning to purchase for additional days, just tap “Plan another day” after you’ve checked out and you’ll be able to easily repeat the selection and check out process.

Once you buy your pass and tap into the lightning lane for the first attraction, you can pick another attraction from the list. Each time you tap in, you can pick another attraction.

The best part? If you have a park hopper or annual pass, you can choose rides in other parks at no extra cost.

Every park offers a mix of classics and new attractions – but not all of them.

To see the full list of rides available at each park, check out my park-specific Lightning Lane guides:

In addition, there are a few rides that aren’t available as part of the Multi Pass service but still have lightning lanes. For more information, check out my guide to individual lightning lane passes.

Can you change your Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections?

Absolutely! Plans change and Disney gets it. You can modify your selections any time before redeeming them.

Keep in mind, if you’re at a tiered-selection park, the rules for Tier 1 and Tier 2 still apply.

As guests shift their plans throughout the day, time slots free up. In addition, Disney will often release new spots for time slots for later in the day to help maintain flexibility. So if you couldn’t get your preferred time slot when you first purchased your pass, there’s still a chance you’ll be able to get it.

Bottom line: Stay alert, check the app often, and you could snag a better ride time!

Pros and cons of Lightning Lane Multi Pass

Like any magical service, Lightning Lane Multi Pass has its perks and potential pitfalls.

Pros

Screenshot off wait times at Magic Kingdom in early September.
  1. Shorter Lines: Spend less time waiting and more time riding. Enough said.
  2. More Rides: Hit more attractions in a single day, maximizing your itinerary and covering more ground, even when you’re visiting during peak time periods, like Spring Break or Christmas.
  3. Flexibility: Make additional selections after using your initial picks and tailor your day to your heart’s desire.
  4. PhotoPass: Get free downloads of any ride photos for rides that are included with Multi Pass.

Cons

  1. Cost: The price can add up, especially for families or during peak seasons when passes can climb up to $39 per person (source). Do some budgeting ahead of time if avoiding long lines is a top priority for you.
  2. Time Slots: You’re locked into one-hour windows and sometimes your preferred time may not be available.
  3. No Annual Passholder Advantage: Unfortunately, this program doesn’t offer unique perks for annual passholders. I hope someday they will, even if it’s just a 1 day advantage for non-resort stayers.

At the end of the day, the pros and cons of this service are really up to you as some things might not matter to you while others I haven’t listed might be a top priority.

How much does a Multi Pass cost?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass pricing starts at $15 per day and can go up to $39 (source), depending on the park, season, and demand. Expect higher prices during holidays, spring break, and summer.

And of course, Disney is a business, so prices can get higher in the future without notice due to the system’s use of dynamic pricing, which in turn relies on supply-and-demand. As much as my bank account hates this, the product manager in me understands it.

Is Lightning Lane Multi Pass worth it?

For most Disney World visitors, the Lightning Lane Multi Pass is totally worth it on busy days when crowds are thick.

If you can strategically chose 1 or 2 days during your trip, you’ll cover all the major attractions without the wait. On quieter days, though, the standby line and single-rider options should get you by perfectly fine without the need for a Multi Pass.
